WESTBROOK – For the third time in four years, the Westbrook baseball team will be playing for the Class A Western regional title and they hope the third time is the charm.

The Blazes advanced to the regional final with a tight 2-1 win over Marshwood at Westbrook High School on Monday afternoon. The game was originally scheduled to be played on Saturday, but was postponed due to rain.

Westbrook trailed 1-0 going into the bottom of the fifth inning when the Blazes’ bats finally started to get going. Sam Stauble led off with a walk, and he advanced to third on a one-out single from Joe Quinlan. Kyle Heath hit a sharp grounder to short, and the Hawks went to third to try and erase Stauble, but the third baseman was pulled off the bag and Stauble was ruled safe on the play. That proved to be fortuitous for Westbrook as the next batter, Scott Heath, ripped a 3-1 pitch into deep center for an RBI sacrifice fly scoring Stauble to tie the game at 1-1.

The Blazes got the winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning, and Stauble was once again in the middle of it. Zach Gardiner led off the inning with a double to center and Caleb Kent came in as a pinch runner. Jake Gardiner laid down a nice bunt up the first base line to move Kent over to third and Stauble came in and hit a sacrifice fly to center, allowing Kent to score on a close play at the plate.

Matt Weimer picked up the win on the mound, throwing a complete game, allowing seven hits and striking out four.

With the win, No. 2 Westbrook will advance to play No. 1 Cheverus in the Western regional final on June 15 at 3 p.m. at St. Joseph’s College in Standish.
