OLD ORCHARD BEACH – The South Portland Red Riots held out some hope for an upset win over top-ranked Cheverus in the Class A West baseball playoffs on Monday, but a big inning for the Stags ended the Riots’ season with an 8-2 loss.

The Riots held an early lead in the game, which was played at The Ballpark in Old Orchard Beach due to field conditions at Cheverus, jumping out to a 2-0 advantage in the top of the third.

South Portland’s Shawn Shannon led the inning off with a walk, scoring on Paul Reny’s triple to left to make it 1-0. Reny came around to score on an RBI sacrifice groundout by Will Bushey to make it 2-0.

But things got tough in the bottom of the fourth as the Stags battered the Riots for eight runs and cruised to the win.

The victory sets the No. 1 Stags up to face No. 2 Westbrook in the Class A Western regional final on Wednesday afternoon at 3 p.m. at St. Joseph’s College.
