FALMOUTH — A quick warning to all Western Class B softball teams; Wells is on a hot streak, and showing no signs of slowing down.
The Warriors continued their streak on Wednesday afternoon, scoring five runs in the the fifth inning for a 5-3 win against Falmouth for their fifth straight win.
Wells finishes the regular season 11-5, having won seven of its last 10 games.
“I would say we’re more experienced,” Wells shortstop Meaghan Lewia said. “We have people playing new positions this year. We’ve had some tough games under our belts, and now we’re just being confident in ourselves and we’re rallying around each other, and being more supportive.”
Wells head coach Kevin Fox said his team has matured as the season has moved along.
“They’ve grown up over the season,” Fox said. “We’ve got great leadership, and we’ve talked about creating scoring situations and timely hits. We started off a little weak, but I said all we needed was that timely hit.”
The Warriors received that hit in the fifth. After Monica Link walked and Katherine Quint reached first on an error, Lewia smacked a pitch into deep left field for a two-run triple, then scored on a throwing error on the same play, tying the score at 3-3.
Kelsey Bragdon later scored on an RBI single by Brianna Smith, and Sabrina Link stole home to give the Warriors the 5-3 lead.
Sabrina Link said Wells wasn’t overly worried about being down 3-0 coming into the inning.
“There’s always that worry,” Link said. “But it’s what you do with it, and we chose to come back and not give up. We knew we could beat them.”
Sabrina Link and Lewia were the offensive leaders for the Warriors, each collecting two hits, including a triple.
Three Falmouth errors aided Wells in the inning. The Yachtsmen made four errors in the game.
“It all came down to the fifth inning,” Falmouth head coach John Keyes said. “They got a couple hits, we got a couple errors, a couple mental errors, and we just gave them the game, and we couldn’t do anything to come back from it.”
Wells sealed the game with its defense, which made only one error in the contest. Lewia and third baseman Jill Sledzieski saw plenty of action on the lefthand side of the infield.
Wells pitcher Kesley Bragdon was also effective, striking out three batters.
As of Thursday morning, the Warriors were the No. 7 seed in the MPA Heal Point standings, meaning they will play Yarmouth in the first round of the playoffs. In their only game against the Clippers this season, the Warriors lost 7-2 on April 27.
But that was before the Warriors caught fire.
