WATERBORO — Chris Dolewa fired in four goals to help Thornton Academy beat Massabesic 9-3, Tuesday, at Ronco Field, in what was the SMAA boys lacrosse regular season finale for both teams.

As both had already stamped their playoff visas, there was little riding on the outcome.

Little surprise, then, that both attacks were sluggish at the outset.

Thornton (9-3) held a slim 2-0 first quarter lead, and eased ahead, 3-1 by halftime.

It wasn’t until the final quarter, which saw the Golden Trojans fire in three unanswered goals ”“ the last two by Dolewa ”“ that play began to open up.

“We started out pretty rough,” said Dolewa, who was dominant in the face off circle. “But in the end, we pulled it together.”

Thornton led from the three-minute mark on after Dolewa cashed in a Dominic Goyet feed to make it 1-0.

Nate Colpitts followed with the first of his two tallies to open up a two-goal margin.

Jacob Desrochers put the Mustangs (6-6) on the board with 8:24 gone in the second stanza.

Thornton’s Parker Roma answered that goal two minutes later.

“We were trying to force passes that weren’t there,” said Thornton coach Ryan Hersey. “We were trying to get (the ball) to people that already had someone on them. It’s never a good thing when you go out for a pass and you get your stick chopped on you. That means you’re not ”˜V-cutting’ enough. You’re not getting open enough.”

The Golden Trojans took a 6-2 lead in the third quarter.

Greg Lodge, who formerly attended Massabesic, polished off that stanza with a stuffer inside the left post.

“We showed some good points here and there,” said Mustangs coach Mark Levesque. “But we still have to throw and catch. That’s 90 percent of the game.”

Pat Wyman gave the Mustangs faint hope early in the fourth quarter when he scored to make it 6-3.

However, taking advantage of man up situations, whipped in the final three goals of the game, settling the matter for good.

“Going ahead,” said Dolewa, “we feel great. We know there are going to be some matchups we can take advantage of. But we’re going to have to keep working hard and crash the net. I think that’s the key.”
