SCARBOROUGH — Biddeford’s Maria Curit broke a record Saturday afternoon and won two Southwestern Conference titles in the process during the Southwestern Conference Championships in Scarborough.
Curit won titles in the long jump and the 400-meter dash. Her leap in the long jump of 17-10.25 broke a 14-year old mark.
“I’ve really been focusing on the long jump this year,” Curit said. “It feels good to know the amount of work I’ve put in is paying off.”
Curit didn’t break a record in the 400-meter dash, but she overcame herself and Scarborough’s Emily Tolman.
Curit trailed Tolman by about eight feet with about 20 yards to go. Curit picked up her speed and edged out Tolman with a time of 59.83 to Tolman’s 59.87 for the conference title.
“I forget sometimes that I have more left and that I need to push,” Curit said. “Today I remembered to do that and it worked out well.”
The javelin competition for the girls also came down to the wire as Biddeford’s Keila Grigware beat Sanford’s Nikki Farmer with a throw of 123 feet to Farmer’s 117.
Farmer’s 117-feet throw came on her second attempt. Grigware trailed until the second to last throw when she launched the javelin 123 feet for the win.
“I think early on there were little things I wasn’t focusing on that I should’ve been,” Grigware said. “On that one throw, I was able to put them all together.”
In the girls shot put, Thornton Academy’s Abigail Huntress won the Southwestern crown with a throw of 38-1.5. She just beat teammate Emily Morin, who also threw 38-1.5, but Huntress’ second best throw was several inches farther than Morin’s, giving her the title.
Huntress won the event after not throwing for a week when she injured her finger on her right throwing hand.
“It hurt a little today and it took me a while to warm up,” Huntress said. “Really, I’m focusing on (this week’s) state title, which is where I hope I will be ready.”
Kennebunk’s Abbey Leonardi also won a Southwestern Conference title in the 3,200 setting a record in the process.
Leonardi blew away the record by more than 30 seconds as she won the title in 10:27.36.
The Scarborough girls and the Bonny Eagle boys won team titles.
