PORTLAND — Youth Building Alternatives, an alternative high school program operated by LearningWorks, has received a $1 million federal grant to continue providing educational services to at-risk youths, school officials announced today.
The two-year grant comes from the U.S. Department of Labor, according to officials at LearningWorks, a social service agency on Brackett Street in the West End.
During the grant period, Youth Building Alternatives will serve more than 65 at-risk students from across southern Maine, said LearningWorks CEO Ethan Strimling.
The program offers carpentry training, construction certification and instruction toward earning a General Educational Development diploma.
A class of 20 students is set to graduate from the program in June.
