KENNEBUNK — Kennebunk’s man up unit was really humming against Deering, in their SMAA boys lacrosse encounter, Wednesday night.
At least it was for a half.
That half proved to be wholly sufficient to boost the K-Rams to a 6-4 triumph over the previously unbeaten D-Rams, Wednesday, at Veterans Memorial Field.
Kennebunk scored four man up goals, three of them by senior Max Meserve, and evened its record at 3-3.
The K-Rams grabbed an early 1-0 lead and held it through the opening quarter.
It was the first of three hookups between set up man Sean Foley (three assists) and Meserve, and came while Kennebunk was a man up.
The K-Rams were cycling the ball around the Deering zone for the second time, when Foley spotted Meserve cutting to the cage and hit him with a nifty pass.
Meserve finished the play by spinning and connecting from 15 feet out.
“I cut in a little bit to the crease,” said Meserve, “then pop back out. The defenseman would slide out a little bit, and that made me wide open.”
Deering appeared to have scored the tying goal with 1:36 gone in the second quarter, when Carleton Allen cut right, then shot left, bouncing the ball in past K-Rams goalie Ben Bath.
However, Kennebunk coach Vinny LoBello had suspicions about the legality of Allen’s stick and chose that moment to challenge it.
Upon inspection by the referees, LoBello was proven correct, and as a result, the goal was wiped out and Allen was given a three-minute non-releasable penalty.
“He went through about eight (defenders),” said LoBello, who said he had never taken such a measure before, “and guys were checking his stick. The pocket looked a little tight. He got whacked a few times and the ball didn’t come out. So maybe it was too deep or too tight.”
The K-Rams cashed in the power play twice in a 10 second span, both on finishes by Meserve.
“We’d been practicing fast breaks,” Meserve said. “That was pretty much what we had. He (Foley) would pass it down to me, and I was open most of the time.”
Kennebunk went on to open up a 6-0 lead before D-Rams’ attack Zach Poulin threw in a righthander with 1:21 remaining in the half.
Deering inched closer in the second half, scoring once in the third quarter to make it 6-2, then netting two more in the fourth stanza.
Allen scored with 1:48 remaining to make it a two goal game, but the K-Rams were able to hang on to the lead the rest of the way.
“It’s disappointing that we didn’t get any goals in the second half,” said LoBello. “But at least we controlled the ball more. We did do that, which limited them. Our defense came through.”
Bath helped preserve the lead by making 19 saves, some of them of the eye-popping variety.
