ORONO – Keith Bilodeau struck out seven and walked one while pitching a two-hit shutout, starting the University of Maine on its way to a sweep of an America East baseball doubleheader Sunday against Albany.
After Bilodeau led the Black Bears (15-20, 5-4 America East) to a 3-0 win in the opener, Maine scored five runs in the bottom of the first in Game 2 and held on for a 5-3 victory over the Great Danes (13-20, 5-4).
Maine took the lead in the first game on a two-run single by Joey Martin in the third inning. Troy Black added an RBI single in the fourth.
Michael Fransoso’s RBI double highlighted the first-inning rally in Game 2. Jeffrey Gibbs allowed just one run on two hits while striking out six over six innings to earn the win.
TRINITY 4, BATES 1: Andrew Janiga struck out five and walked three while tossing a four-hitter as the Bantams (15-14, 5-4 NESCAC East) beat the Bobcats (11-14, 2-7) at Lewiston.
Bates got its only run in the fifth when Rich Velotta singled and scored on a triple by Pat Murphy.
SOFTBALL
BINGHAMTON SWEEPS MAINE: Jessica Bump led off the bottom of the sixth inning with a double and scored on a double steal to give the Bearcats (20-15, 8-3 America East) a 6-5 win over the Black Bears (16-27, 6-8) in the opening game of a doubleheader at Vestal, N.Y.
In Game 2, Binghamton scored five runs in the first two innings and went on to a 7-3 victory.
Jennifer Eberhardt had two hits and scored three runs in the opener for the Black Bears, who had leads of 4-1 and 5-3. Kali Burnham and Terren Hall added three hits apiece, and Jenny Macdowell drove in a pair of runs.
Hall hit a three-run homer in the second game.
