Yes, it rained on Saturday — hard at times, with a cold wind off the water to boot. Not a great day to fly kites, which spelled bad news for the aerial part of the Kites, Bikes & Trikes Family Festival at the Owls Head Transportation Museum.

Organizers and participants were undaunted, however, moving the proceedings inside and making the most out of kite-building workshops, bike and helmet safety inspections, and the Cardboard Contraption Contest. An enclosed Kids’ Corral offered pedal cars and pedal planes for younger children.

Ethan Yankura, education director at the museum, said a few hobbyists were able to fly their kites outside in the morning before the rain started falling in earnest. After moving indoors, the museum brought out large industrial fans to give the kites a lift and keep the kids smiling.

Not bad for a rainy spring day in Maine.
