PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Nick Douglass threw a five-hit, seven-inning shutout as the University of Southern Maine defeated Plymouth State 12-0 to earn a split in a Little East Conference baseball doubleheader on Friday afternoon.
Douglass struck out seven for his third win of the season. Eight of the nine Huskies (15-14, 4-6) had at least one hit to help put the 10-run rule into effect. Tucker White, Forrest Chadwick and Brett Barrett each drove in two runs.
In the first game, the Panthers (9-20, 3-7) rallied for a 10-7 victory. Southern Maine led 6-2 after four innings before Mike Cappiello tied the game in the fifth with a three-run homer.
ST. JOSEPH’S 8, DANIEL WEBSTER 6: Alex Lorenc drove in three runs on three hits to lead the Monks (23-11) past the Eagles (16-10) at Standish.
Relief pitcher Joe Gruntkowksy was credited with the win. He struck out six, walked three and allowed six hits.
BOWDOIN 12, COLBY 1: Brett Gorman went 4 for 4 with three home runs, six RBI and five runs to lift the Polar Bears (18-7, 6-1 NESCAC) over the Mules (10-16, 0-7) at Brunswick.
Gorman tied a school record with three homers in a game.
BRIARCLIFEE SWEEPS SMCC: Defending USCAA national champion Briarcliffe College shut out Southern Maine Community College 9-0 and 4-0 in a doubleheader at South Portland.
Richard Ireland pitched a three-hitter in the first game for the Seawolves (10-16, 5-5 YSCC). He struck out seven.
In the second game, Briarcliffe scored four runs in the first two innings.
Daniel Harty struck out 12 and walked five while throwing a no-hitter.
TRINITY 7, BATES 3: Joe Papa went 4 for 5 and scored three runs as the Bantams (14-13, 4-3 NESCAC) beat the Bobcats (10-13, 1-6) at Lewiston.
Noah Burke had two RBI and Ryan Sonberg had three hits and an RBI for the Bobcats.
SOFTBALL
BOWDOIN 4, BATES 1: Casey Correa blasted two home runs to lead the Polar Bears (18-14, 7-3 NESCAC) over the Bobcats (7-10, 1-6) at Lewiston.
Correa had three of Bowdoin’s five hits. Melissa DellaTorre tossed a complete game four-hitter while striking out eight.
TUFTS SWEEPS COLBY: Alysssa Lepore had hits in both games as the Mules lost twice to the Jumbos, 6-0 and 4-0 in a NESCAC doubleheader at Medford, Mass.
In the first game, Rebecca DiBiase gave up two hits, walked one and struck out five for the Jumbos (18-14, 6-2) against the Mules (7-16, 0-8).
In the second game, Lena Cantone singled and scored on a walk for the winning run in the first.
USM, KEENE STATE SPLIT: Sophomore Katie Davis drove in five runs and hit her fourth home run of the season as the Huskies (4-30, 2-8 LEC) earned a 6-3 victory to take the first game of their doubleheder with Keene State (25-8-1, 7-3) at Gorham.
Keene State won the second game in six innings, 13-2.
ST. JOSEPH’S SWEEPS LASELL: Maddie Kluna pitched a no-hitter in the first game and Rae-Marie Copan threw a complete game three-hit shutout as the Monks (27-7) held the Lasers (9-27) scoreless and won 8-0 and 5-0 at Standish.
Danyelle Shufelt led St. Joseph’s, going 6 for 7 and scoring four runs over two games.
Jill Howard, Emily Leverone and Connie Grove drove in three runs apiece.
