PORTLAND — The skeletal remains of a 24-year-old Portland woman who was reported missing in July were discovered Sunday “in a remote area of the state,” police said.

The state Medical Examiner’s Office identified the remains as Elena Lozada, according to a news release from the Portland Police Department.

Portland police, who have been working with Maine State Police and the Medical Examiner’s Office, are classifying the case as an unattended death with suspicious circumstances.

Police said in December that they hadn’t found anyone who had spoken with Lozada since July. They said she was moving out of her apartment at 80 Grant St. and had plans to travel to Boston. However, she spent the weeks immediately after moving out staying with friends in the Portland area.

Police said the investigation continues and they expect to release more details in the next few days. They ask anyone with information about the case to call 874-8533.
