Maineiacs cap series with 6-3 victory over Montreal
Pierre-Olivier Morin scored a pair of goals, including the eventual game-winner 7:41 into the third period, as the Lewiston Maineiacs won their best-of-seven, second-round playoff series against the Montreal Junior with a 6-3 win in the sixth game on Sunday night at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee.
Stefan Fournier also scored two goals for Lewiston and also had an assist, and Michael Chaput and Jess Tanguay added one goal and one assist apiece. Lewiston goalie Nicholas Champion finished with 36 saves to earn the win.
The Maineiacs advance to face the top-seeded Saint John Sea Dogs in the third round.
TENNIS
FED CUP: The United States was relegated from the top-tier World Group in the Fed Cup for the first time, falling to Germany when Melanie Oudin lost her singles match to Andrea Petkovic at Stuttgart, Germany.
Petkovic won 6-2, 6-3 to give Germany an insurmountable 3-0 lead in the best-of-five series.
The Americans have won a record 17 Fed Cup titles, but they were without the Williams sisters and could not overcome the higher-ranked Germans.
MONTE CARLO MASTERS: Rafael Nadal won his seventh straight Monte Carlo Masters title, beating David Ferrer 6-4, 7-5 in Monaco.
The top-ranked Nadal chalked up his 37th straight win at the clay-court event, where he has not lost since 2003. It was his 44th career title.
Nadal had lost his three previous finals, twice to second-ranked Novak Djokovic and once to No. 3 Roger Federer.
AUTO RACING
INDYCAR SERIES: Mike Conway made a late pass on Ryan Briscoe to win the Grand Prix of Long Beach, earning his first career IndyCar victory in just his third race since a horrific crash last year in the Indianapolis 500.
Conway started third and hung around the leaders on the 11-turn, 1.968-mile circuit through the streets of downtown Long Beach, Calif. After a series of late crashes, he finally took the lead with 14 laps left by whipping past Briscoe.
FORMULA ONE: McLaren driver Lewis Hamilton won the Chinese Grand Prix at Shanghai, passing Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel for the lead with five laps remaining.
Vettel made a strong bid for three straight wins to start the Formula One season but he could not hold off Hamilton, who had fresher tires in the closing stages.
Red Bull’s Mark Webber, who started 18th, made a remarkable run to finish third.
McLaren’s Jenson Button was fourth, ahead of Mercedes’ Nico Rosberg and Ferrari’s Felipe Massa.
SOCCER
MLS: Hunter Freeman scored in the 86th minute and homestanding Houston Dynamo beat the New England Revolution 1-0 for their second straight win.
Houston (2-1-2) also extended its unbeaten streak to four games.
Matt Reis made seven saves for New England (1-2-3), which has lost two straight and is winless in its last four.
FA CUP: Stoke routed Bolton 5-0 Sunday to reach the final for the first time in the team’s 148-year history. This was the biggest victory in an FA Cup semifinal since 1939 when Wolverhampton beat Grimsby by the same score.
Stoke struck in the first 30 minutes, with Matthew Etherington, Robert Huth and Kenwyne Jones all punishing a shoddy defense with goals.
Stoke, the Premier League’s oldest club, will play Manchester City for the title at Wembley on May 14.
PREMIER LEAGUE: Arsenal’s title hopes were hurt when Liverpool salvaged a 1-1 draw with a penalty kick in the 12th minute of injury time. Arsenal could be set for a sixth straight season without a major trophy.
CYCLING
VUELTA DE CASTILLA AND LEON: Xavier Tondo of Spain won the race, protecting his overnight lead to finish nine seconds ahead of Bauke Mollema of the Netherlands and 17 in front of countryman Igor Anton in Medina, Del Campo, Spain.
Tour de France champion Alberto Contador placed 24th overall, almost three minutes off the pace in a bid for to defend his title.
