GORHAM ”“ Because of some sketchy Spring weather and the lack of practice time outdoors, the Kennebunk boys laxers were forced to hold their dress rehearsal and grand opening all at once.
It took them a while, but the K-Rams made that opening a truly grand one, as they took away a 12-8 triumph, Friday, in an SMAA clash.
Max Meserve led the way with four goals, while Sean Foley and Clayton Spang chipped in three each, helping Kennebunk get it’s season off to a successful start.
Or make that, a restart.
The K-Rams trailed 4-1 after the opening quarter, then reeled off a 10-2 goal run.
“We struggled the first quarter,” said Meserve. “It was like pre-season. But then we got all our jitters out and started to get the ball in the back of the net.”
Kennebunk took an early 1-0 lead when Foley gathered up Bobby Kramer’s rebound and swatted it in.
They didn’t hold the lead for long, as the G-Rams replied with four consecutive goals.
“That was our preseason,” said Kennebunk coach Vinny LoBello, “as far as playing against anybody else. You could tell. We needed that first half. It’s the first time we’d played against anyone.”
Meserve echoed his coach’s thought.
“We just had to get the cobwebs out,” he said.
Meserve swept away a few himself by setting off a three goal second quarter K-Ram surge, netting two of those in the first 4:57.
The last two of those came in a 13 second spurt.
“We just started to get more pumped up,” said Meserve. “I think we started talking about our offense, and got the cuts that we wanted.”
They also received a key save from freshman goalie Ben Bath, that led to the go ahead goal by Spang with 41 seconds left in the half.
Bath, made six saves in his varsity debut.
“He played great for his first time,” said LoBello.
Connor Smith scored for Gorham early in the third quarter to knot the score again, 6-6.
But Kennebunk replied with goals from Sean Finn, Foley, and Meserve to take a 9-6 lead into the fourth quarter.
“We were taking smart shots,” said LoBello. “Then at the end, when you’ve go the lead, you don’t have to force the ball. Move it around and let them come to you.”
The G-Rams did make matters interesting, by scoring twice and creeping back to within 11-8 with 9:26 to play.
However, Finn scored again in the dying moments to seal the win.
