Boys Tennis
Coach: Wayne Martin
Last year’s record: 16-0, won Class A state championship.
Key returning players: Three seniors – Logan Cummings, Ben Richardson and Anthony Terrano should serve as an experienced base for this championship team. Talented juniors Ryan Johnson, Devin Pelletier, Tyler Nadeau, Eric Kneeland and Dakota Cummings round out the core of the team.
Key matches this season: Martin expects stiff competition from Cheverus, Scarborough and Kennebunk.
Season outlook: The Windham boys tennis team finally broke through with a state championship last season after several years of dominating performances, snapping Lewiston’s incredible 119-match winning streak in the state finals last spring. But graduation hit the Eagles hard last year, though Martin feels that Windham will still field one of the top teams in Class A. “After losing seven seniors to graduation, it will be interesting to see how our young players respond,” Martin said. “This year’s team is eager to prove that they are worthy, and they expect to carry on the winning tradition. Our doubles teams will be strong once again with new faces. Singles will be strong but inexperienced. The key to our success will be our singles play.”
Baseball
Coach: Mike Fullerton
Last year’s record: 10-8, lost in the Western Maine semifinal to Biddeford.
Key returning players: The Eagles are looking for a good year out of pitcher and infielder Ben Noble, pitcher and outfielder Drew Gagnon, catcher Cody Laberge, pitcher and infielder Cody Dube and infielder Robbie Hamilton.
Season outlook: ‘This season we will look to reload the middle of the field after graduating our starting catcher, shortstop, second baseman and center fielder from the 2010 season,” Fullerton said. “We will return our entire pitching staff and some key bats in last year’s lineup. While there are definitely gaps to fill, we have the talent and the experience from last summer to make this a successful season.”
Boys Track
Coach: Paula Pock
Last year’s record: Sixth at states
Key returning athletes: The Eagles will look to sophomore Damien Shepard, who scored in the long jump and 200 for indoor, junior Patrick Rice for hurdles and triple jump, junior Robbie Hamilton in throws, junior Jevaughn Gibbs in sprints and throws, junior Travis Harkins in jumps and sprints and juniors Sam Brockelbank and Rob Cave, senior Cody Cook, and freshman Robbie Blair in distance.
Key meets this season: “The athletes always look forward to the Westbrook relays, and our regular season meets with Westbrook and Gorham,” Pock said.
Season outlook: “We have a great group of hard working kids, so – although we don’t have many star athletes – we should score in almost all events in regular season meets,” Pock said. “Our goal is to have more athletes to qualify for the state meet.”
Softball
Coach: Mark Tucker
Last year’s record: 3-13
Key returning players: Tucker said that he will look to Elizabeth Silvius, Logan Genest, and Sarah Richards to serve as the basis for the team. As it was last year, Windham will still be a very young team.
Key games this season: “The SMAA is the toughest softball conference in the state,” Tucker said. “Every team poses a tough challenge.”
Season outlook: Tucker said the Eagles will have a young team this spring, but will feature several sophomores who got regular playing time last season. “The Lady Eagles are still a young squad, working hard to gain experience in the toughest conference in the state,” Tucker said. “Last year, five freshmen saw regular starting time in the lineup, and they gained valuable experience. Freshmen Morgan Richmond and Katelyn Tucker will likely fill key roles at the top of the lineup to solidify the batting order this year, as well as being important pieces on defense. The Lady Eagles will look to improve toward becoming a playoff-bound team.”
Boys Lacrosse
Coach: Chris Shorr
Last year’s record: 7-5
Key returning players: “We have talent across the board – more depth than we’ve ever had,” Shorr said.
Key games this season: “We open at Massabesic,” Shorr said. “That’s our focus right now.”
Season outlook: Windham has a young program, but the Eagles have risen rapidly and look to take the next step this season. “We will look to get into the playoffs after two seasons of near misses,” Shorr said. “This is a team whose success will be defined by how hard they play, and how well they work together. Our goals are more than achievable, but we’ve got a lot of work to do. The kids have really pushed themselves in the offseason – playing in indoor leagues and getting into the weight room. In just our third year of varsity competition, they appear to have realized the commitment it takes to be successful at this level. They’ve been remarkably upbeat while enduring some truly challenging preseason practices. We are no longer the upstart underdogs of a couple years ago; we’re a program on the rise. As a coach, I’m really excited to see the kids perform this spring, because it’s obvious that they want the Windham Eagles to leave their mark on the 2011 season.”
Girls Lacrosse
Coach: Deb LeBel
Last year’s record: 8-4
Key returning players: The Eagles will call upon the skills of Samantha Gifford, Christina Pollard, Bebe Butts, Colleen Hutchinson, Molly McVetty, Beth Shively and Jill Gamache.
Key games this season: LeBel said that she expects to be in tight games against Deering, Thornton Academy and Cheverus.
Season outlook: “This is going to be a rebuilding year,” LeBel said frankly. “We lost 11 seniors last year and an outstanding goalie. We have a lot of younger talent that we hope are ready to fill some key positions.”
