BIDDEFORD — City firefighters are on the scene of a plane crash tonight. One person has been confirmed dead, according to the Federal Aviation Authority.

The FAA said a small airplane crashed into a home at 235 Granite St. Extension, setting the home on fire.

The owners of the home, Kim and Steve Myers, were not inside the residence when the plane struck around 6 p.m.

The couple told The Portland Press Herald that they had come home to pick up their dog, Jeneva, before leaving to have dinner at Kim Myers’ sister’s home.

The airplane landed on top of the four-bedroom, single-story ranch, blowing out windows and destroying the home’s interior. A section of the plane’s wing could be seen hanging off the front of the home.

It is still not clear who was piloting the plane or how many persons were in the aircraft when it hit. The crash site is about one mile from the Biddeford Municipal Airport.

Mark Beaulieu, who lives on nearby Bernard Avenue, said he heard an engine’s plane stall out. His initial reaction was the plane was going to strike his home. When he looked up he saw the plane flying low to the ground.

Biddeford firefighters had brought the house fire under control by 7:15 p.m.

More than 100 onlookers gathered at the crash site Sunday night.
