BIDDEFORD — Eight people were displaced this morning after a fire destroyed a three-unit apartment building.

The report of a basement fire at 36 State St. came in just before 5 a.m., Biddeford Fire Department Capt. Rick Dussault said. Everyone in the building evacuated safely as the fire continued to spread, he said. It took crews about an hour to bring the fire under control.

Investigators from Biddeford Fire Department and the State Fire Marshal’s Office are still on scene to determine the cause of the fire, Dussault said.

Red Cross is working to help those displaced by the fire.
