Kendra Lord of Buxton was selected as a finalist Monday in the “Simply ReMarthable Contest” on “The Martha Stewart Show” on Hallmark Channel. The show will be repeated at 1 p.m. today.
Lord was selected for her 5,000 square-foot garden, in which she raises more than 50 varieties of vegetables.
She enjoys planting things that are not typically grown in Maine, including miniature citrus trees and pineapple plants.
“I watch Martha Stewart pretty much every day,” Lord said by telephone from Orlando, Fla., where she is vacationing.
“I just happened to see they were doing this contest. I’m pretty passionate about what I do, so I gave it a shot, and apparently they really liked it.”
She and her husband also have a small farm with chickens, turkeys and pigs, all raised organically.
In the past few years, she has planted fruit trees, asparagus, strawberries and other perennial vegetables.
“We try to be pretty self-sufficient,” Lord said. “The plan is that pretty soon we won’t have to make many trips to the grocery store.”
She said there is no real secret to growing pineapples and citrus plants in Maine.
“I grow them in pots,” she said. “They are indoor-outdoor plants.”
Lord is one of five finalists chosen from more than 3,500 entries — including everyday chefs, crafters, and other creators and innovators — in the contest.
Lord will showcase her talent live on “The Martha Stewart Show” on March 29.
Lord did not find out she was a finalist until Monday, and isn’t sure how the winner will be selected.
“I think Martha and her staff are just going to talk to us and pick who they want to win out of the finalists,” she said.
The grand prize is a 2011 BMW X3 customized by the domestic diva herself.
The winner will be announced on Stewart’s April 1 show.
