HALLOWELL – The future of the Kennebec Ice Arena remains in doubt, more than a week after its roof collapsed.
K.C. Johnson, the arena’s manager, said Thursday that the operators are still trying to determine how to proceed with the building, which was badly damaged in the collapse on March 2.
“We’re still working hand in hand with the insurance company,” Johnson said.
Hallowell Code Enforcement Officer Maureen AuCoin said the building’s owner, Peter Prescott, will need a demolition permit before the arena’s crumpled walls can be torn down. Any plan to repair the building also will require a permit.
No permits had been issued for the building as of Thursday, AuCoin said.
A thick folder containing plans and notes on the arena going back to its construction in the early 1970s was on AuCoin’s desk Thursday. She said the folder has attracted interest in recent days, including from insurance company representatives.
The file includes blueprints created in 1973 by the engineering firm Steel-Span Inc. of Braintree, Mass. An Internet search turned up no indication that the company still exists.
The arena, a longtime fixture for many skaters, crumbled, apparently as a thickening snowpack overburdened the roof.
No one was hurt. Three people escaped from the building as the roof collapsed during a brief break between events. Because the arena was nearly empty, police called the timing of the collapse “a miracle.”
