NEW YORK – Kemba Walker scored 28 points and No. 21 Connecticut remained alive in the Big East men’s basketball tournament with a 79-62 second-round victory over No. 22 Georgetown on Wednesday.

Despite being the higher-ranked team, the Huskies (23-9) had fallen all the way to the ninth seed in the conference tournament and were forced to beat DePaul in the opening round just to face the eighth-seeded Hoyas. UConn now gets top-seeded Pittsburgh in the quarterfinals.

Georgetown (21-10) still has not won since losing guard Chris Wright to a broken left hand. He was hurt Feb. 23 at Cincinnati, and Coach John Thompson III has said Wright could return for the NCAA tournament.

Walker only had 11 points at halftime, but dominated over the final 20 minutes while moving ahead of Richard Hamilton for fourth on the school’s single-season scoring list with 748 points.

Jason Clark had 23 points and Austin Freeman scored 20 to lead the Hoyas, but they combined to go just 2 of 13 from beyond the 3-point arc.

(17) ST. JOHN’S 65, RUTGERS 63: Dwight Hardy had 17 points and St. John’s (21-10) held off Rutgers (15-17) to advance to the quarterfinals of the Big East tournament for the first time since 2003.

Sean Evans had 13 points and nine rebounds for the Red Storm, who won despite failing to make a field goal in the final four minutes. Evans, a 55 percent free-throw shooter, made both ends of a 1-and-1 with 17.7 seconds left to give St. John’s a 64-61 lead.

MARQUETTE 67, (20) WEST VIRGINIA 61: Darius Johnson-Odom scored 11 points, including two big 3-pointers in the final minutes, and Marquette (20-13) beat West Virginia (20-11) in the second round of the Big East tournament at New York.

(25) CINCINNATI 87, SOUTH FLORIDA 61: Yancy Gates was 10 of 11 from the field and scored a career-high 25 points, leading Cincinnati (25-7) to a rout of South Florida (10-23) in the Big East tournament at New York.

OKLAHOMA STATE 53, NEBRASKA 52: Keiton Page scored 16 points and Oklahoma State (19-12) held off Nebraska (19-12) in the first round of the Big 12 tournament at Kansas City, Mo.

Page, who led the Big 12 by shooting 90.2 percent from the foul line, missed the front end of a 1-and-1 with only seconds left. Nebraska grabbed the rebound but could not get off a shot before the final buzzer.

LONG ISLAND 85, ROBERT MORRIS 82: Jamal Olasewere scored seven of his 31 points in overtime and Long Island (27-5) earned its first NCAA tournament bid in 14 years with an overtime victory over Robert Morris (18-14) in the Northeast Conference final at New York.

OKLAHOMA 84, BAYLOR 67: Cade Davis scored 24 points and Oklahoma (14-17) hit nine 3-pointers en route to a victory over Baylor (18-13) in the first round of the Big 12 tournament at Kansas City, Mo.

Baylor’s LaceDarius Dunn, the Big 12’s all-time leading scorer, had foul trouble and scored just 11 points on 3 for 14 shooting.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

(3) BAYLOR 86, KANSAS 51: Destiny Williams scored a career-high 21 points and Brittney Griner added 19 points, eight rebounds and five blocks to lead Baylor (29-2) into the semifinals of the Big 12 tournament with a win over Kansas (20-12) at Kansas City, Mo.

The Bears built a 43-19 halftime lead as Griner had eight points and four blocks.

(8) TEXAS A&M 77, TEXAS 50: Danielle Adams scored 23 points and Sydney Colson and Tyra White each added 14 as Texas A&M (27-4) cruised past Texas (19-13) to advance to the semifinals of the Big 12 tournament at Kansas City, Mo.

(13) WISCONSIN-GREEN BAY 89, LOYOLA OF CHICAGO 41: Celeste Hoewisch scored 19 of her 23 points in the first half as Wisconsin-Green Bay (30-1) routed Loyola (12-19) in a Horizon League quarterfinal at Green Bay, Wis.

(21) OKLAHOMA 71, TEXAS TECH 69: Danielle Robinson scored 19 points and Carlee Roethlisberger added 18 to lead Oklahoma (21-10) over Texas Tech (22-10) in the Big 12 tournament quarterfinals at Kansas City, Mo.

BASEBALL

FLORIDA STATE 9, MAINE 3: Devon Travis went 3 for 4 with a home run and four RBI to lead the Seminoles (12-1) past the Black Bears (3-11) at Tallahassee, Fla.

Joey Martin and Mike Connolly each had two hits and an RBI for Maine.

MEN’S LACROSSE

ST. JOSEPH’S 13, THOMAS 3: Spencer Hunt scored five goals and Jake Ricciardi added three to lead the Monks (2-1) past the Terriers (0-1) at Deering High in Portland.

Christopher Driscoll made 11 saves for St. Joseph’s.
