PORTLAND — Behind two goals each from Craig Decato and Anthony Figlioli and 29 saves by senior goalie Alex Ahrikenchikh, York High is one step closer to its season-long goal.
The No. 2 Wildcats beat third-ranked Cape Elizabeth 5-1 on Saturday night at Portland Ice Arena to advance to the Western Class B final Wednesday at the Colisee in Lewiston. The defending Western Maine champs will face either No. 1 Greely or No. 4 Yarmouth.
“Everybody on this team, except two players, have been to the state championship,” York Coach Mike Vessey said. “The whole season has been about one thing, and that’s getting back to (the state final). We haven’t talked about individual stats all season long.”
York (14-5) beat Cape (13-6) twice during the regular season, 1-0 and 5-3. After that second game, both teams were muddling along near the .500 mark, but York outscored opponents 49-5 in its final six regular-season games.
“This past month, York has been on a tear. I knew we were up against it,” Cape Elizabeth Coach Bill LeBlond said.
The teams combined for three goals in the second period from a total distance of about three feet.
Cape Elizabeth cut York’s lead to 2-1 at 4:28 when Nicholas Breed cashed in after Cape crashed the net.
“I have to give it to Cape Elizabeth. They came out in the second period and … they beat us to the pucks,” Vessey said.
York responded with two goals from in tight. Defenseman Conor O’Brien shoved in a backhand at 8:24, and Craig Decato made it 4-1 with just 34 seconds left in the period when he banged in a Figlioli pass.
“That (O’Brien goal) helped change the tempo of the game back in favor of York,” Vessey said.
York controlled the first period with its special teams. On the Wildcats’ second power play in just over two minutes, Decato took a crisp cross-ice pass from Figlioli. He struck a one-timer from near the right faceoff circle that zipped past Rosenfield at 8:57.
Just 2:03 later the scoring roles were reversed, with Figlioli sniping in a sharp-angled shot after Rosenfield coughed up a soft clear-in by York, which was killing a penalty.
Figlioli finished the scoring, chipping in a close-range shot with 32 seconds to play. Cape had hindered its chances in the third period by taking consecutive penalties early, then having power forward Matt Ross whistled for hooking, elbowing and a 10-minute misconduct with 2:16 left. Earlier in the game, the Capers were unable to beat Ahrikenchikh on close-range bids, including two partial break-ins by Ross in the first period and an early third-period chance by Breed.
“We rely on each other a lot more (this year),” Ahrikenchikh said when asked to compare this year’s York squad to last season’s. “Last year we had a lot of power forwards, and honestly I wasn’t asked to do much. This year I really had to try to step it up and keep my team in every game.”
