TAMPA, Fla. – Clay Buchholz, in his second outing and first start of spring training, limited a loaded lineup to a single by Alex Rodriguez in three innings as the Boston Red Sox beat the New York Yankees, 5-3.
Buchholz walked two and struck out two.
“I looked at (the lineup) and I was like, ‘Man, another All-Star team,’ ” Buchholz said. “But I think it’s good going out there and facing some guys like this. It definitely makes you better.”
Red Sox left fielder Josh Reddick robbed Robinson Cano of extra bases with a flat-out dive for a ball that was over his shoulder. Oscar Tejada, who played Class A ball last year, had a two-run triple and an RBI single for Boston.
“I’ll take a two-hour bus ride to watch those young kids do what they did. That was worth the bus ride,” Boston Manager Terry Francona said.
• First baseman Adrian Gonzalez, who had surgery on his non-throwing right shoulder last October, took 80 swings, including 10 off a pitching machine. “He felt really good,” Francona said.
• Red Sox right-hander Josh Beckett threw 40 pitches in a three-inning, simulated game at Fort Myers, Fla.
Beckett missed his scheduled start Thursday. He experienced mild concussion symptoms after being hit in the left temple Monday by an errant ball while shagging flies in the outfield during batting practice.
Beckett is expected to make his next start Tuesday. The Red Sox have split-squad games that day against the Astros at home and in Jupiter, Fla., against the Cardinals.
Beckett faced six Red Sox minor leaguers, throwing a mix of all his pitches.
“I felt good,” he said. “It’s a (simulated) game. There’s just not a lot of adrenaline and stuff that goes into that. But I like it when the guys go up there and swing. (It) gives you a little bit of feedback one way or the other. It’s hard to get a lot of feedback if the guys don’t swing, just not a lot of things that correlate to a game unless you have a little bit of something going on.”
Beckett said he feels his overall condition and arm strength are where they need to be.
