Regarding the Maine Voices column by Karen D’Andrea, the executive director of Maine Citizens Against Handgun Violence, that suggests a ban on high-capacity magazines: It’s easy to see that she just doesn’t get it (“Ban on big ammo magazines deserves broad support,” Feb. 17).

We people that target practice use them so we don’t have to keep reloading after every five shots. D’Andrea relates all the incidents in which people were killed or wounded using high-capacity magazines. How about people that were killed or wounded using five-shot magazines or less? No talk of that.

She talks about being able to walk into a supermarket on a Saturday without worrying about a gunman opening fire with a high-capacity magazine.

Maybe she should think about this one: a gunman walking into a supermarket on a Saturday with a five-round shotgun with buckshot in it. How much damage does she think that would cause? Get real. If someone is intent on killing or maiming others, they can do it with a car at a Fourth of July parade.

Banning high-capacity magazines will not stop people intent on hurting or killing others. People who want to purchase high-capacity magazines will get them on the black market.

Common sense in these matters goes a long way.
