AUGUSTA – Top-ranked Richmond High knocked off fourth-seeded Greenville 34-22 at the Augusta Civic Center on Thursday to reach the Western Class D girls’ basketball final for the first time in 10 years.
The Bobcats (19-1) will face third-ranked Valley (13-6) for the regional title at 1 p.m. Saturday at Augusta.
“We haven’t been there in a really long time and it’s about time we go there,” said Jamie Plummer, a 5-foot-10 center for Richmond.
Plummer finished with 14 points and was the focal point of Greenville’s zone defense.
“They did a great job of clogging the middle so we just worked the ball around,” Plummer said. “We tried to eventually get them to pull out but they really didn’t. We were just patient and patient, and a couple of times we were able to get them off their feet and get the ball inside.”
The Bobcats led from start to finish after opening with three consecutive 3-pointers, two from Brooke Lancaster and one from Danica Hurley.
“That was huge, definitely,” said Hurley, who finished with 10 points.
“That got our momentum going.”
Greenville (13-6) cut the lead to 12-11 early in the second quarter, but the Lakers shot just 8 of 35.
VALLEY 50, RANGELEY 47: Cindy Schultz made just 4 of 18 shots but scored 16 points as third-seeded Valley (13-6) reached the Western Class D final for the third time in six years by beating second-ranked Rangeley (16-4) at Augusta.
“They double teamed me and they wouldn’t leave me alone,” Schultz said. “It was hard but we pulled through.”
Emily Carrier scored 17 points and Chantal Carrier added 10 for Rangeley.
“We played with passion,” Valley Coach Gordon Hartwell said. “Everybody who stepped on the floor for us contributed.”
