AUGUSTA – An Augusta man faces two counts of aggravated assault stemming from a racially charged incident outside a nightclub that left another man with a fractured skull late last year.
Jawaan L. Stalling, 26, a former University of Maine at Augusta basketball player, is accused of beating a 23-year-old man with a stick in Augusta on Nov. 13.
Stalling was arrested Feb. 15 at the Augusta Police Department then freed after posting $1,000 cash bail.
Kennebec County District Attorney Evert Fowle said the charges result from an altercation “with some racial overtones” that occurred outside a Water Street nightclub.
Augusta police records show officers responded to a report of an aggravated assault there at 1:22 a.m. on Nov. 13.
The two charges relate to the same incident.
One says Stalling caused “serious bodily injury” while the other says Stalling caused “bodily injury.”
Fowle said Stalling has cooperated with Augusta police and admitted his involvement.
A grand jury in Kennebec County returned the indictment Friday, but it was sealed until Stalling’s arrest.
“There was an altercation between the victim, the defendant and several others,” Fowle said Wednesday. “The victim took off running and Stalling is alleged to have chased him down and pounded him repeatedly with a club or a stick. Our victim suffered a fractured skull as a result.”
Fowle said the victim has been released from the hospital and is making good progress.
“It appears as though this incident had racial overtones,” Fowle said. “There were some racial epithets before the assault.”
Stalling is black, and Fowle said the victim is white.
