Police chased a man for six miles through Madison and into Skowhegan, where he was boxed in by three cruisers and arrested this morning.

Steven Couture, 46, of Madison, is facing a slew of charges, including two felonies for eluding a police officer and passing a road block, said Cpl. Joe Mitchell of the Madison Police Department.

Mitchell attempted to pull over Couture just before 7 a.m. for unsafe passing and speeding 65 mph in a 50-mph zone on White School House Road in Madison.

“He just didn’t want to stop,” Mitchell said.

Mitchell chased Couture who drove his red Ford Escort at about 60 mph from White School House Road onto Lakewood Road to Madison Avenue in Skowhegan, where Skowhegan police had set up a spike mat near Burger King.

“Got a tire out with that,” Mitchell said. “That slowed him down.”

Mitchell and two Skowhegan officers created a blockade with their cruisers, boxing in Couture’s car near Hight Chevrolet. Mitchell said Couture tried to get through the trap and ran into a Skowhegan cruiser.

Couture then refused to get out of his car and the three officers had to remove him, Mitchell said. He was taken to Somerset County Jail.

In addition to the felonies, Couture is facing charges of driving to endanger, operating after suspension, refusing to submit to arrest and “a bunch of traffic violations,” Mitchell said.

He said Skowhegan police would likely also charge him for hitting the cruiser, which wasn’t badly damaged.
