The No. 7 South Portland girls
basketball team went into the Portland Expo on Monday hoping for an
upset of No. 2 McAuley, but it wasn’t to be as the Lions pulled
away with a 52-27 win.

“font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;”>The win sends the Lions
into the Class A semifinals against No. 2 Gorham on Friday night at
7:30 p.m. at the Cumberland County Civic Center.

“font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;”>South Portland came out
fast in this one, taking an early first-quarter lead over the
Lions, but McAuley, led by Rebecca Knight, came sprinting back,
taking a 24-14 lead at the half.

“font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;”>The Lions didn’t give the
Riots a chance to come back in the second half, playing a tight
defense that limited South Portland to just 13 second-half points
as McAuley cruised to the win and the date with the
Rams.
