PORTLAND — Gov. Paul LePage said he will stand firm on his pledge to sign only bond packages approved by voters, look for ways to help Maine hospitals deal with costs under the federal health care overhaul law and possibly modify his plan to abolish the Land Use Regulatory Commission.
LePage made his remarks at Portland’s Eastland Hotel to about 100 members of the Greater Portland Chamber of Commerce. The crowd gave him several standing ovations.
The governor’s Portland appearance is the first of his “Capitol for a Day” program, modeled on former Gov John McKernan’s effort to conduct the business of state government in a city or town rather than in Augusta.
This afternoon he is visiting Harbor Fish Market, the Preble Street Resource Center, Barber Foods and National Semiconductor. Those meetings are closed to the press.
He will answer questions from the public at the Westbrook Performing Arts Center at 6 p.m. Doors open to the public at 5:15 p.m.
