WESTBROOK — Gov. Paul LePage capped his administration’s first  “Capitol for a Day” with a town hall meeting that drew more than 150 people.

The governor and several of his cabinet picks took the stage at the Westbrook Performing Arts Center tonight to field questions from the audience. The crowd was agreeable, with applause and laughter occasionally punctuated the event.

The questions addressed issues ranging from the rising cost of health care coverage to red light cameras to repeal of the state’s billboard ban to the need balance environmental protection with a business-friendly climate.

LePage borrowed the idea of “Capitol for a Day” from former Gov. John McKernan, who would conduct state business around the state rather than in Augusta. LePage plans to attend a town hall meeting and visit businesses monthly in one of Maine’s 16 counties. .

Earlier in the day, the governor spoke before a friendly group at the Greater Portland Chamber of Commerce. He also visited Harbor Fish Market, Barber Foods, National Semiconductor and the Preble Street Resource Center.
