SCARBOROUGH — A 1913 Civil War statue at Dunstan Corner may need a new home because of a redesign of the intersection.

According to Assistant Town Planner Jay Chace, the Maine Department of Transportation is planning to add a right-hand turn lane on Route 1 to Broadturn Road, cutting into an already small park where the monument stands.

The town will host a public meeting Wednesday, Feb. 23, at 7 p.m. at Town Hall to discuss whether to move the statue to a new location or leave it where it is.

Chace said options include moving the monument directly across the street to town-owned land, to the Dunstan Cemetery or the Oak Hill Memorial Park.

“We don’t have a particular place in mind,” Chace said. “We’ve contacted the American Legion and the Historical Society and heard a number of different things.”

After the public meeting, Chace said the Planning Department will put together a recommendation for the Town Council to review.

The granite statue depicts a Civil War soldier holding a large rifle. The inscription reads: “Scarboro To Her Sons Who Fought For The Union 1776-1913.”
