BATH — Bath Iron Works announced it will lay off 130 production employees who make the company’s DDG-51 Arleigh Burke destroyers.
Shipyard spokesman Jim DeMartini noted that the Arleigh Burke-class is winding down as construction shifts to the Zumwalt-class destroyer, so the demand for carpenters, electricians, insulators, outside machinists, pipe workers, sand blasters and tinsmiths has declined. The first of the 600-foot-long Zumwalt ships is several years away from completion.
The layoffs announced today will be effective March 2. Last month the shipyard laid off 130 workers, as well. DeMartini said the company is working with the union to try to find other work at BIW for the staff slated to be cut.
Despite the layoffs, the shipyard anticipates relative stability over the next two years, as long as there are no changes to the Navy’s ship-purchasing plans.
