BUXTON – Buxton police said this week that four juvenile suspects have been arrested and face multiple charges in connection with a November burglary and theft at a Buxton church.
The juveniles, who have been released to their parents, include Bonny Eagle High School students, Buxton Police Chief Mike Grovo said Monday.
Grovo said charges include burglary, class C crime, a felony; theft, class C; criminal trespass, class D, misdemeanor; robbery, class B, felony; accomplice to robbery, class C; receiving stolen property, class E, misdemeanor; and unsworn falsification, a misdemeanor.
A police report alleges that around Thanksgiving, two youths used a pry bar to gain entry into the Living Waters Christian Church on Route 112 and stole a collection of electronic components, a video gaming system and an undisclosed amount of cash. One of the juveniles involved in the burglary was subsequently beaten and robbed by two other juveniles.
Buxton Officer Vaughn Staples investigated the incidents and made the arrests.
According to a police report, the video gaming system and related components stolen in the break-in have been recovered.
“We didn’t recover the money,” Grovo said.
But the report said discussions are under way with parents concerning restitution of the stolen funds.
According to its webite, Living Waters Christian Church operates a school; a helping hands ministry providing pre-made meals for needy families in the community; a food pantry; and a mother’s closet with supplies like diapers, which are not covered by food stamps.
“It is disheartening to see this type of incident take place at a church that is so involved in our community,” Grovo said in a prepared statement. “We have spoken with the parents of the juveniles involved and feel the charges have been swift, yet fair.”
“I am pleased with the investigation conducted by our department. To those who provided the information that led to the arrests of these young men, I would like to say thank you for having the courage to come forward,” Grovo said.
