BUXTON – Finding itself now in need, the Buxton Community Food Co-op is planning an indoor yard sale in a struggle to generate cash to keep its doors open.
To raise money to pay for heating oil and electricity, JoAnn Groder, food co-op director, said Monday a two-day yard sale will be held Friday and Saturday, Feb. 11 and 12, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., at its building on Route 22 in Buxton Center. The sale will include lots of furniture, Christmas items, arts and crafts along with dishes.
“The food co-op is not in very good shape,” Groder said. “We just barely made our oil last month.”
Groder said the past month’s oil bill was $450 and electricity costs about $60 a month. She said monetary donations supporting the building are down.
The co-op serves about 50 people on each of the four days it’s open weekly. The doors open for clients at 9:30 a.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Groder said the tables of food are bare by 10 a.m.
Hannaford donates food to the co-op.
“Hannaford is very good to us,” Groder said.
Groder founded the co-op, which opened in December 2007.
