Even as a stagnant economy has caused many businesses to cut back, a Windham company is bucking the trend and expanding.

Due to steady growth owed to a rising demand for its services, SystemArchitecture.NET, an information technology consulting company, has expanded into a larger office space, moving from one Windham building to another.

Founded and still operated by Windham resident Vincent Micale, the company had been occupying space at 816 Roosevelt Trail next to Napa Auto Parts but had to move offices due to expansion in October. The consulting firm is now located at 32 Tandberg Trail.

“We’ve got a great team in place and we’re really at a point where the team is driving the business,” Micale said.

Micale reports sales have grown 40 percent each year for the past three years straight. In a down economy, Micale credits his 16-member crew, which consists of graphic designers, database developers and computer programmers, for the consistent growth.

The North Windham-based IT consulting company originally started off as a programming and database development company and expanded about four years ago into IT support, which includes back-up solutions and network security. Micale says the focus is serving the IT needs of small- to medium-sized companies. Micale says SystemArchitecture.NET is as an alternative for smaller companies who want to or have to outsource their IT needs due to costs.

“The reliance on technology has really become unbelievably important over the past decade, more so than ever,” Micale said. “Very few businesses survive without major computer systems to help them run their businesses, so they need computer systems to survive and function. That’s what we do.”

Like a well-proportioned stock portfolio, Micale also credits diversification of its customer base for why the company has done so well. In total, the firm carries about 60 clients.

“We don’t really have any major concentrations in terms of industry,” Micale said. “We have customers in insurance. We have customers in finance. We have companies that are in health care, wellness. And I do attribute our success over the years to that, because as the economy has gone through some challenges, we’ve been able to maintain a good solid customer base.”

The consulting firm has a strong customer base in Maine as well as New York City and the Greater Boston area. “But numbers-wise, our concentration is in Maine. We have customers in Portland, Lewiston-Auburn, Windham, all the way to Leeds and as far south as Sanford and South Portland,” Micale said.

Micale, who also serves as the president of the Windham Economic Development Corporation, majored in economics at UMass Lowell and took some post-graduate computer science classes at Boston University. He founded SystemsArchitecture.NET in 2002 after selling his stake in a technology company in 1999.

“It’s been a lot of work, lot of sacrifices,” Micale said. “The first few years, it was really just me. I had to do the sales, the accounting, the engineering. It was definitely challenging for the first few years, but now, really, the company is the team, and it is the people.”

And while he could have based anywhere, Micale chose the Lakes Region for its geography and many natural features. Many of his employees are also from Windham or the surrounding area.

“With technology these days, it really doesn’t matter where we are in terms of our ability to service our customers,” Micale said. “But I personally relocated up here so I could live in this area. I personally very much like the Lakes Region. It’s got a pretty geography. We can get to Portland relatively easily. We can get to the Lewiston/Auburn area relatively quickly. We can get to Boston relatively quickly. We’re right near the highway, so Windham is a pretty well-situated.”
