The Red Sox Hot Stove Baseball Night will be held Monday at the Bangor Civic Center. The event will feature Red Sox radio broadcasters Joe Castiglione and Dave O’Brien. Doors will open at 6 p.m. and the show will start at 7. The event is free and will include an autograph session. There will be a tribute to the Bangor Senior League team, which made a World Series appearance, and Matt Stairs, who broke the major league record for career pinch-hit homers. The Maine Hoops Basketball Club, an AAU program based at the Southern Maine Sportszone in Saco, will hold tryouts starting Jan. 29. Tryouts for boys and girls in grades 3 to 6 will be held Jan. 29 and Feb. 5 at the following times: third and fourth, 2 to 3:30 p.m.; fifth, 3:30 to 5; sixth, 5:30 to 7. Grades 7 to 9 will try out on Jan. 30 and Feb. 5: seventh, 8:30 to 10 a.m.; eighth, 10:30 a.m. to noon; ninth, 12:30 to 2 p.m. Grade 10 to 12 tryouts will be Feb. 6 and 13: 10th, 8:30 to 10 a.m.; 11th, 10:30 to noon; 12th, 12:30 to 2 p.m. For more information, call Jim Seavey at 468-4685.
The Western Maine Baseball Umpires Association, which provides umpires for schools and leagues in Cumberland and York counties, will hold an umpire certification course starting Jan. 30.
