BURLINGTON, Vt. — Gerald McLemore scored 14 points, including the 1,000th of his career, to lead the University of Maine to a 72-58 victory over Vermont in an America East Conference men’s basketball game Tuesday night.

Raheem Singleton and Troy Barnies each also scored 14 for the Black Bears (11-7, 5-1 America East Conference), who never trailed in winning their fourth straight game.

With the score tied at 7, Maine went on a 10-2 run and led 37-28 at halftime.

Vermont (12-5, 3-2), which had won five of its last six games, opened the second half with a 9-2 spurt capped by Matt Glass’ 3-pointer to trim the gap to 39-37.

Singleton made a layup and Andrew Rogers hit a 3-pointer to build the Black Bears’ lead back to seven.

McLemore reached his 1,000th career point on the first of two free throws with 5:53 left and now has 1,003.

(23) ILLINOIS 71, MICHIGAN STATE 62: Brandon Paul scored 17 of his 20 points in the first half to lead Illinois (14-5, 4-3 Big Ten) past visiting Michigan State (12-6, 4-2).

The Illini led 53-43 on a 3-pointer by Paul with 13:08 to play but had to hold off a late Spartans charge and won with seven free throws from four players that built a two-point lead back up to 65-57 with 5:28 left.

(23) GEORGETOWN 80, SETON HALL 75: Austin Freeman scored 28 points and Georgetown (14-5, 3-4 Big East) went 8 for 9 from the free-throw line in the final 2:11 to hold off Seton Hall (8-11, 2-5) at Newark, N.J.

(11) NOTRE DAME 80, (16) GEORGETOWN 58: Skylar Diggins scored 17 of her 22 points in the first half and added six assists to lead Notre Dame (16-4, 5-1 Big East) to a win over Georgetown (14-5, 2-3) at South Bend, Ind.

TEXAS TECH: Coach Tommy Tuberville got a one-year contract extension that runs through 2015 and a raise that boosts his annual salary to $2 million, the school announced.

Tuberville led the Red Raiders to an 8-5 record his first season, including a 45-38 win over Northwestern in the TicketCity Bowl in Dallas.
