Two pedestrians hit by a pickup truck early this morning have been transported to Maine Medical Center, where one appears to be in critical condition with numerous injuries.

Richard Tarvers, 30, of Windham, the driver of the vehicle, is in the Cumberland County Jail after having been arrested for operating under the influence.

Windham police officer Paul Cox witnessed the accident, which occurred shortly before 1 a.m. A 32-year-old male and 31-year-old female were walking east on Route 115 in the area of Sandbar Road when they were struck by the truck, according to a press release issued by Windham Police.

While Cox tended to the victims, Sgt. Peter Fulton chased down the truck, which had left the scene. Results of a blood alcohol test are pending.

Names of the victims will not be released until immediate relatives are notified.
