U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree, D-Maine, will join a bipartisan group of lawmakers from the House Armed Services Committee, who are scheduled to tour the detention facilities at the U.S. Naval base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, on Monday.
A release issued by her office tonight says the group of lawmakers, including Armed Service Committee Chairman Buck McKeon (Rep.-Calif.), will inspect the detention facility and talk to top military officials about the detainees who are being held there.
The detention facility at Guantanamo opened nine years ago. It currently houses 173 prisoners.
