Tire manufacturer to close local plant, idling 61 workers

Maine Industrial Tire LLC, which operates a manufacturing plant in Gorham with 61 workers, will close this spring as part of a business consolidation, the company says.

Production will be consolidated in two remaining facilities, in Red Lion, Pa., and Xingtai, China.

The company, which is based in Wakefield, Mass., and makes solid tires for industry in Maine, also will realign its sales force to better reflect the growing importance of its Brawler solid industrial tire brand, according to Modern Tire Dealer magazine.

College of the Atlantic gets $1 million from 1984 graduate

An alumnus of the College of the Atlantic is giving $1 million to the school.

The college announced Friday that the offering from 1984 graduate Jay McNally is the largest gift the college has ever received from a former student.

After graduating, McNally founded Ibis Consulting Inc., an electronic data management company that he sold in 2006.

He now lives in Bar Harbor, where he works on land conservation issues while serving on the college’s board of trustees.

Holiday weekend will be 4 days for state employees

State offices will be closed on Monday.

Friday was a government shutdown day, required by the state budget to save money.

On Monday, state offices will be closed in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

The shutdown affects executive branch departments, agencies and offices. Four shutdown days are scheduled after today’s, one in each month through May.
