BRUNSWICK — Bowdoin scored three times in the first eight minutes and defeated the University of Southern Maine 7-1 Friday night in a men’s hockey game at Sidney J. Watson Arena.

Brendan Reich had a hat trick for the Polar Bears (9-2), who sealed the win with two goals in the first 2:16 of the third period.

Jeff Fanning added two goals and Daniel Weiniger and Colin Downey each scored one for Bowdoin.

Angelo Vrachnas scored his first goal of the season 3:52 into the second period for the Huskies (4-7-2). 

COLBY 11, UNE 1: Tom McGinn had two goals and an assist and Billy Crinnion had a goal and four assists to help the Mules (3-8-1) down the Nor’easters (2-10) at Waterville.

Jack Bartlett and Karl Burns chipped in a goal and three assists each and Michael Doherty had four assists.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

WILLIAMS 56, BATES 50: Chessie Jackson scored 19 points as the Ephs (14-1, 1-0 NESCAC) held off the Bobcats (11-4, 0-1) at Lewiston.

Allie Beaulieu led Bates with 14 points and eight rebounds coming off the bench. Jessie Igoe contributed 10 points and seven rebounds.

The Bobcats scored nine straight points to take a 47-46 lead with 4:11 left, but the Ephs responded with an 8-0 run. 

(3) DUKE 87, (21) FLORIDA STATE 70: Jasmine Thomas scored 22 points to lead Duke (16-0, 2-0 ACC) to a victory over Florida State (14-1, 2-1) at Tallahassee, Fla.

The Blue Devils got 15 points each from Haley Peters and Tricia Liston, and Chelsea Gray scored 13.

Courtney Ward scored 25 points and Alexa Deluzio added 17 for Florida State, which closed within three points with 12:28 left before Duke quickly regained command. 

(11) NORTH CAROLINA 83, N.C. STATE 76: Italee Lucas scored 19 points as North Carolina (16-1, 2-1 ACC) blew nearly all of a 24-point lead in the second half before holding on to beat N.C. State (9-8, 1-2) at Chapel Hill, N.C. 

(22) MIAMI 77, CLEMSON 48: Riquna Williams scored 29 points to help Miami (17-1, 3-0 ACC) beat Clemson (8-10, 1-2) at Coral Gables, Fla.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

WILLIAMS 68, BATES 50: James Wang scored 23 points to lead the Ephs (14-1, 1-0 NESCAC) over the Bobcats (8-7, 0-1) at Lewiston.

Troy Whittington added 14 points, 10 rebounds and three blocked shots for Williams, which had runs of 10-0 and 12-1 in the game.

Brian Ellis led the Bobcats with 23 points.

WOMEN’S HOCKEY

ST. ANSELM 8, USM 0: Goalie Amy Zappen stopped 22 shots as St. Anselm (11-3-0, 5-3-0 ECAC East) shut out Southern Maine (3-9-1, 2-6-1) at USM Ice Arena in Gorham.
