WESTBROOK – It is hard to imagine a scenario in which LEGO blocks would be helpful in building an actual home.
But the plastic multicolored children’s toy is a crucial material for Habitat for Humanity as it continues its work on a house in Westbrook for a single mother and her three children.
Habitat for Humanity of Greater Portland is hosting the YOUth Can Build LEGO House Buildathon Saturday at the Maine Mall. Each dollar raised through the donations and fundraising efforts of competitors will help put the finishing touches on the Westbrook woman’s home, which is one of three currently under construction off Lincoln Street, according to Kate Callahan, Habitat’s volunteer manager and event coordinator.
“Their house is already under construction but we’re still raising money to complete it,” she said, estimating a spring completion date.
Between 75 and 100 children typically show up for the annual LEGO event, and this is the first year it has had a fundraising focus on a specific Habitat home, Callahan said.
There is a $25 minimum fee to participate, and participants are encouraged to fundraise prior to the event. Pre-registration is strongly encouraged to provide more time for fundraising efforts.
Support from the community “is pretty vital to the organization,” Callahan said.
During the event, youth and families participate in teams to build with LEGOs for an afternoon. Sign-in begins at 12:30 p.m. and teams of up to three people will have a two-hour time period to build a home, Callahan said.
Judges will be on hand to select winners, with trophies awarded for the best of various age groups. All ages are welcome. To pre-register, call 772-2151. The event takes place at center court in the mall.
