As forecast, heavy snow began falling across southern Maine this morning, leading schools and businesses to close.
The snow began about daybreak and is forecast to continue until tonight, with 8 to 12 inches across southern and coastal areas of Maine. Winds are expected to cause blowing snow, with gusts up to 40 mph as the storm moves up the coast, and visibilty is forecast to be poor as a result.
Most schools told kids to stay home and many businesses were also shuttered. Even though that led to light traffic during the early commute, police reported vehicles skidding off I-295 and I-95.
A winter storm warning, which kicked in at 7 a.m., will stay in place until midnight. Most of the snow is forecast to fall during the day, with another inch or so after dark, but winds are expected to keep plows busy by blowing snow back across road.
Tomorrow is expected to be much better, with sunny skies, highs in the low 30s and lighter winds.
