Cheverus is the only team still unbeaten in Class A boys’ basketball after this past weekend’s action.

The Stags are certainly not puffing their chests out and saying “look at us”. They know Western Class A is too unpredictable.

Thornton Academy fell from the unbeaten ranks on Friday night, losing to Deering, 50-48. The Golden Trojans will be looking to bounce back Tuesday night.

And what better time to do it than with Cheverus visiting Linnell Gym in Saco.

Cheverus will have some blowouts. The league still has its share of struggling programs. But there also will be tight games for the Stags before the tournament pairings are finalized.

Bonny Eagle, Deering, Scarborough, Westbrook and South Portland are all capable of beating anyone. While Cheverus and Thornton jumped out of the gate early, the race for the top two seeds is far from over.

After losing the lead in an opening defeat against Bonny Eagle and scoring only 28 points against Scarborough, Deering has beaten Gorham, Biddeford and Thornton. The win over the Golden Trojans was huge for the Rams, who played excellent defense in holding down standouts Andrew Shaw and James Ek.

Deering displayed excellent depth, using nearly its entire squad to get the victory. The Rams were able to maintain their defensive pressure thoughout because of their depth. It’s the way they’re going to have to play if they want to go deep into the postseason.

Senior guard Jackson Frey showed his scoring capabilities as he eruputed for 11 points in the first quarter against the Trojans. Jon Amabile, a first-team all-conference player last season, took over in the second quarter, scoring nine of his 22 points.

THORNTON ACADEMY is considered one of the best boys’ hockey teams in the state, but the Trojans are 3-3.

Thornton is winning the games it is expected to, easily (9-1 over Portland, 5-2 over Scarborough, 5-1 over South Portland), but has lost to Lewiston (5-0), St. Dom’s (5-4) and Biddeford (5-1).

“We’ve got a lot of work to do to beat the best teams in the state,” Trojans Coach Shawn Rousseau said. “Biddeford did not allow us to play our game. Games like this expose our weaknesses.”

LAST YEAR, Biddeford forward Brady Fleurent benefitted from playing on the same line as his brother, Trevor, the best player in the state. Now that Trevor has graduated, Fleurent is teamed with Bryan Dallaire, who transferred from Thornton Academy.

The chemistry has been instant, with the two combining for 14 goals and 22 assists in five games for the unbeaten Tigers (3-0-2).

“We just find each other,” Fleurent said. “He is a great player. It’s pretty easy to play with him.”

SINCE LOSING its opening game, the Scarborough girls’ hockey team has gone 6-0-1, including three wins last week. The Red Storm shut out contender Cheverus 3-0 on Saturday, getting three goals from Abby Rutt.

Rutt, who missed the 2-1 loss to Biddeford in November, should be in uniform today when the Red Storm play at Biddeford.
