IOWA CITY, Iowa — Freshman Jared Sullinger had 24 points and 12 rebounds and No. 2 Ohio State rallied to overtake Iowa 73-68 in a Big Ten men’s basketball game Tuesday night.
Jon Diebler added 14 points for the Buckeyes (15-0, 2-0 Big Ten), who have won five straight over the Hawkeyes for the first time in school history.
Iowa cut Ohio State’s 13-point lead to 71-68 on Zach McCabe’s 3-pointer with 24 seconds left. But Aaron Craft made two free throws and forced a turnover to put away the Hawkeyes (7-7, 0-2).
The Buckeyes trailed 35-29 at halftime but opened the second half with a 29-10 run.
Melsahn Basabe had 22 points, 13 rebounds and six blocks for the Hawkeyes.
(5) PITTSBURGH 83, PROVIDENCE 79: Gary McGhee scored all of his 13 points in the second half, grabbing a key rebound and making two free throws with 18 seconds left to lead visiting Pittsburgh (14-1, 2-0 Big East) past Providence (11-5, 0-3).
(14) NOTRE DAME 73, (8) UCONN 70: Ben Hansbrough scored 21 points and Notre Dame (13-2, 2-1 Big East) survived a late surge by UConn (11-2, 1-2) for a win at South Bend, Ind.
Kemba Walker scored 19 to lead the Huskies but had his string of 11 straight games with at least 20 points snapped.
BOSTON U. 61, UNH 54: John Holland scored 15 of his 20 points in the second half as Boston University (6-10, 1-1 America East) defeated New Hampshire (6-8, 0-2) at Boston.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
(3) DUKE 54, (10) KENTUCKY 48: Jasmine Thomas scored 24 points and Duke (14-0) used a late surge to get past Kentucky (11-2) at Durham, N.C.
Chelsea Gray added 11 points and made the go-ahead layup with 39.9 seconds left. Thomas hit four free throws in the final 14.7 seconds to seal the win.
(7) TEXAS A&M 105, LOUISIANA-MONROE 57: Danielle Adams scored 32 points, leading Texas A&M (12-1) past visiting Louisiana-Monroe (8-7) for its sixth straight win.
(15) GEORGETOWN 80, (23) SYRACUSE 62: Monica McNutt scored 27 points and Sugar Rodgers had 24 points and 10 rebounds as Georgetown (13-3, 1-1 Big East) defeated visiting Syracuse (12-2, 0-1).
The Hoyas forced the Orange into a season-high 31 turnovers, 21 in the first half.
MEN’S HOCKEY
USM 3, MIDDLEBURY 3: David Nies scored twice and Braely Torris stopped 35 shots to help the Huskies (4-4-2) earn a tie with the Panthers (3-4-1) at Middlebury, Vt.
Nies broke a 2-2 tie at 6:30 of the third, but Tucker Donahoe scored his second power-play goal of the game with 4:13 remaining to tie it.
Matt MacDonald also scored for the Huskies, who were outshot, 38-22.
BOWDOIN 5, WENTWORTH 3: Kyle Shearer-Hardy, Daniel Weiniger and Harry Matheson each had one goal and one assist to lead the Polar Bears (7-1) past the Leopards (6-5-2) at Brunswick.
Jeff Fanning and Graham Sisson also scored for the Polar Bears, who led 4-1 entering the third period. Goalie Steve Messina made 23 saves.
WOMEN’S HOCKEY
ST. ANSELM 2, COLBY 1: Kristen Byrne scored winning goal 6:46 into the third period to lift the Hawks (7-3) over the Mules (4-7) at Waterville.
Colby tied the game on a goal by Meredith Reynolds 2:32 into the second.
USM 5, SACRED HEART 4: Joanna Gaube scored three minutes into overtime as the Huskies (3-6-1) beat Sacred Heart (2-14-0) at Gorham.
Kailey Bubier scored her second goal of the game for USM with 13 seconds remaining in the third to force overtime. Jana Sacco also had two goals for the Huskies.
