Kostelic, Pietilae-Holmner victorious in parallel slalom, Miller places third

Ivica Kostelic and Maria Pietilae-Holmner won the debut parallel slalom events, which were open to the top 16 men and women in the World Cup standings, in Munich on Sunday.

Bode Miller took third and Lindsey Vonn went out in a quarterfinal matchup against Pietilae-Holmner in the side-by-side racing that drew 25,000 fans.

Kostelic beat Julien Lizeroux over two heats in the final by a total of 1.61 seconds. Miller earned third by beating Felix Neureuther by 0.05 seconds. Pietilae-Holmner trailed Tina Maze by 0.12 seconds after the first heat of their final, but came back to win by 0.47 seconds. Elisabeth Goergl beat Daniela Merighetti for third.

MAJOR LEAGUES: Baltimore Orioles reliever Alfredo Simon is the main suspect in the New Year’s Eve killing of a man in the Dominican Republic, police said.

The pitcher is suspected of killing Michel Castillo Almonte, 25, and wounding Almonte’s 17-year-old brother during a celebration in the northeast coastal town of Luperon, police said in a statement. No motive was disclosed. Simon is from the Dominican Republic, and police said he fled after the violence.

Simon, 29, joined Baltimore in 2008, and went 4-2 with 17 saves a 4.93 ERA last season.

Relief pitcher Hideki Okajima agreed to a one-year deal with the Red Sox, pending a physical this week, according to a major league source. Okajima, 35, had a 4.50 earned run average in 56 appearances last season.

BRISBANE INTERNATIONAL: Feliciano Lopez beat Philipp Petzschner 6-5, 7-6 (11) in a first-round match in Brisbane, Australia. Sally Peers upset Alisa Kleybanova 3-6, 6-4, 6-3, and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova beat Alla Kudryavtseva 6-2, 6-7 (5), 6-3.

HOPMAN CUP: Novak Djokovic clinched a win for Serbia against Kazakhstan, rallying past Andrey Golubev 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 for a 2-0 lead in Perth, Australia.

SOCCER

PREMIER LEAGUE: American goalkeeper Brad Friedel made outstanding saves to help Aston Villa to a 3-3 draw at Chelsea, leaving the defending English champion outside the top four in the Premier League. Manchester United and Manchester City share the lead with 41 points. They are followed by Arsenal (39), Tottenham (36) and Chelsea (35).

HOCKEY

QMJHL: The Lewiston Maineiacs acquired defenseman Jonathan Parisien from the Baie-Comeau Drakkar for a fifth-round pick in the 2011 QMJHL draft.
