KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The Colby women’s basketball team held Castleton State (5-4) to 14 points in the first half and opened the second half with a 22-2 run as the Mules (8-1) cruised to a 64-37 victory on Sunday at the ECAC Holiday Classic.
Jil Vaughan finished with 13 points and seven rebounds to lead a balanced attack for the Mules.
Jacky McLaughlin added 10 points and Diana Manduca and Rachael Mack chipped in with eight points apiece.
BOSTON UNIVERSITY 78, MAINE 40: Chantell Alford scored 22 points to pace the Terriers (4-9) as they opened the second half with an 18-0 run to pull away from the Black Bears (2-11) in an America East opener at Boston.
Ashleigh Roberts led the Black Bears with 12 points, finishing in double figures for the fifth straight game. Katelyn Vanderhoff added nine points.
BOWDOIN 71, WELLESLEY 39: Nicole Coombes finished with 15 points and seven rebounds to lead the Polar Bears (8-1) as they held the Blue (7-2) to just 18 points in the second half to pull away in the first day of the Bowdoin Women’s Basketball Classic at Brunswick.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
WPI 83, UNE 50: Jeffrey Robinson scored 15 points, including his 1,000th career point, to lead the Engineers (9-3) past the Nor’easters (2-9) in the Jim Beaudry Classic at Biddeford.
ROGER WILLIAMS 69, BATES 67: Pat Flanagan scored 24 points and blocked seven shots to lead the Hawks (7-4) as they made 11 of 12 free throws in overtime to edge the Bobcats (7-4) in the consolation game of the Naismith Classic in Springfield, Mass.
CATHOLIC 79, USM 77: R.J. Dixon made four straight foul shots in the final 26 seconds of regulation as the Cardinals (10-2) held on for a win over the Huskies (7-4) in the championship game of the Residence Inn Greenbelt Classic in Washington.
Corteze Isaac scored a game-high 32 points for the Huskies.
UMASS-BOSTON 69, COLBY 65: Jason White scored with 33 seconds left in regulation to break a 65-65 tie and lift the Beacons (6-4) to a win over the Mules (5-6) at the ECAC Holiday Classic in Kissimmee, Fla.
WOMEN’S HOCKEY
PROVIDENCE 2, MAINE 1: Jennifer Friedman scored what proved to be the winning goal 3:56 into the second period and the Friars (14-5-1, 5-2-1 Hockey East) held on for a win over the Black Bears (8-8-4, 2-4-2) at Orono. Brittany Ott made 29 saves for the Black Bears.
UMASS-BOSTON 6, BOWDOIN 4: Rachel Sousa scored the winning goal with 3:41 left in regulation as the Beacons (5-5) scored five third-period goals to rally past the Polar Bears (6-3) in the opening round of the Codfish Bowl at Boston.
