Old Orchard Beach is one of 15 communities nationwide to receive a $5,000 grant from the Tony Hawk Foundation for a new skate park in town.

The recreation department applied for the grant this fall, submitting a conceptual design as part of the application, Recreation Director Jason Webber said.

Plans for a new skate park have been in the works for about a year. The council has already allocated $30,000 for the project, which is estimated to cost between $70,000 and $100,000, Webber said.

The Skateboard Park Committee continues fundraising for the project and planning for the skate park.
