PORTLAND — Two workers had to be transported by ambulance to Maine Medical Center in Portland this afternoon after a trench collapsed on them.

A Portland fire dispatcher said a work crew was in the process of digging a trench to lay down pipe when the trench collapsed in the vicinity of 33 Canco Road.

The Portland Fire Department responded to the accident, which took place just after 4 p.m., and is still at the scene.
