SCARBOROUGH – Scarborough’s Michael Cyr is one of 12 semifinalists for the coveted Fitzpatrick Trophy, which is awarded annually to the best senior high school football player in Maine.

Cyr, who played tight end and defensive end for the Storm this season, is joined on the list by: Nicholas Gagne, Biddeford, fullback, linebacker; Joshua Woodward, Thornton Academy, quarterback, defensive back; Caleb Kenney, Portland, fullback, linebacker; Peter Gwilym, Cheverus, quarterback, defensive back; Nicholas Proscia, Yarmouth, fullback, linebacker; Jamie Ross, Deering, quarterback, punter, kicker; Ethan Drigotas, Kennebunk, wide receiver, defensive back; Kyle Bishop, Waterville, quarterback, safety; Maxwell Cloutier, Leavitt, center, defensive tackle; Jonathan Haws, Hampden Academy, quarterback, safety and Cameron Kaubris, Mountain Valley, quarterback, defensive back.

Cyr had an outstanding season for the Red Storm, as Scarborough, under new head coach Lance Johnson, turned in a program-best 8-2 record and a berth in the Class A playoffs.

Cyr led the team in receiving, with 17 catches for 336 yards with an average of 19.77 yards per catch, with his longest reception being 37 yards. He also led the Red Storm in scoring with eight touchdowns for a total of 48 points on the season. He also carried the ball 18 times, gaining 99 yards, for an average of 5.5 yards per carry.

But Cyr’s contributions were not limited to the offensive side of the ball. This season, he led the Storm in tackles with 51 solo tackles and 22 assists for a total of 73 on the season. He also recorded one interception and recovered a fumble while also being credited with causing two fumbles.

The 12 semifinalists were selected by a committee made up of media representatives and members of the Maine chapter of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame. The 12 semifinalists will be listed on a ballot to be sent to Maine football coaches and media members this month and the three finalists will be announced in mid-December.

The winner of the Fitzpatrick Trophy will be announced at a banquet in Portland on Jan. 16.
