WESTBROOK – Students from Westbrook and the surrounding area will be the audience for an upcoming play addressing bullying and safety on the Internet.
“Wired,” a play written by Betty Quan from Canada’s Green Thumb Theatre, hits the stage of the Westbrook Performing Arts Center on Wednesday, Dec. 1. The play meets Maine curriculum requirements but also provides a starting point for crucial conversations in all classrooms, according to organizers.
Jamie Grant, the performing arts center’s general manager, said more than 200 Westbrook fifth graders will attend the school-time performance.
Seating will also be available at a discounted rate for Westbrook Middle School students, and students from South Portland and surrounding districts will be in attendance as well, said Gretchen Berg from Portland Ovations, the play’s presenter.
“Everything we’ve heard about this performance has been terrifically positive,” she said, noting the Green Thumb Theater is known for performances that resonate with its audience.
The Green Thumb website states the group creates and produces plays that explore social issues relevant to the lives of children, youth and young adults.
The showing of “Wired” is timely given recent discussions within the Westbrook School District. School committee members evaluated the possible implementation of procedures to deal with bullying before scrapping the procedures and updating the district policy. The policy gives administrators discretion when dealing with bullying.
In “Wired,” the lead character, Damian, learns that cyberspace is not necessarily as friendly as he had thought. The play examines the pressures of growing up in a world of laptops, texting and camera phones, where face-to-face conversation is not as common as it once was.
The play will be shown at 10:30 a.m. on Dec. 1 at the Performing Arts Center at 471 Stroudwater St. Tickets are $7, but can be purchased by Westbrook Middle School students and teachers at a discounted price of $5.
