SCARBOROUGH — The North Yarmouth Academy field hockey team is going back to the state title game.
NYA knocked off Telstar 3-2 in the Western Maine Class C final Tuesday night, getting a pair of second-half goals from Katie Millett to hold off the Rebels for the second straight year.
The Panthers will face Foxcroft on Saturday at the University of Maine in Orono. Foxcroft beat Dexter 1-0 in overtime to win the Eastern title.
“Now we’re onto Orono. It’s a whole other wave of confidence,” said Millett. “It was really nice to be back on turf tonight. We really wanted to distribute the ball evenly.”
NYA (16-1) outshot Telstar 9-7 and handled the ball well using a possession-oriented style that spread the field and utilized every player.
The Panthers took the lead when Megan Fortier scored with a backhander on a breakaway with 8:02 to play in the first half. Millett set up the goal with a long ball from midfield.
Telstar was awarded a penalty stroke after time expired in the half, when NYA goalie Mariah Farrell covered the ball with her pads on a penalty corner. Katelyn Sumner converted to make it 1-1 at halftime.
Millett got her first goal with 14:33 remaining off a feed from Jen Brown, beating goalie Hali Barter in traffic from the short side.
Millett made it 3-1 with 3:38 to play, tipping in a shot by Katie Cawley.
“That turned out to be the key goal of the night,” said NYA Coach Julia Sterling.
“We talked at halftime about keeping control of the ball. Our passing was awesome but they had a very good defense. It was hard to get through.”
Telstar cut the lead to 3-2 when Sumner converted on another penalty stroke with just 1:50 to play.
“Last year we went into states not expecting to win,” said Millett. “This year we are ready.”
Telstar, which normally plays on grass, said Coach Gail Wight, finished the season 15-2.
“It’s frustrating to come and play a team on turf that plays on turf all the time,” said Wight. “But my girls moved the ball well and didn’t give up. They stayed in the game.”
NYA lost by a goal to Dexter last year, but has different plans this season.
“I just told them to keep up their spirits,” said Sterling. “I really think whoever we play, there is more to come from us.”
